University of Birmingham
The Department of African Studies and Anthropology (DASA) at the University of Birmingham is a small and friendly Department with a focus on social and cultural anthropology. We have particular strengths in the anthropology of gender and kinship; law, bureaucracy and reform; migration and mobility; urbanization, livelihoods, and the economy; sources and texts; and religion and religious difference. This links in well with our offer of Anthropology as a part of a Joint Honours degree with African Studies, Archaeology, Classical Civilisations and Literature, History, and Politics.
DASA has an excellent international reputation for research, which includes strong links to scholars and institutions on the African continent. Our Anthropology degree actively encourages ethnographic research by undergraduate students, and staff members support all students to develop their own anthropological interests. The University of Birmingham is the most targeted university for graduates by leading employers; after they graduate, our students work in NGOs and a range of companies, the civil service, media, and other professions.
