ASA student funding criteria

The ASA has a small amount of funding for student bursaries, given out as ASA funding to UK-based Anthropology students.

The rules and criteria are straightforward:

  • ALL applications must be submitted via the online form.
  • These funds are only available for Post Graduate Research (includes PhD and MRes students) student members of the ASA based in UK.
  • Only those earning (includes grants) a maximum of £1200 net income* per month may apply.
  • Applicants should not seek 'double full funding'. Our aim is to support those who already have partial funding from another source or no funding at all.
  • Requests for funding may cover registration, accommodation, and travel, but NOT membership subscriptions.
  • Funding will be prioritised for those paying the full conference fee, rather than day-rate attendees.
  • Demonstration of other partial sources of funds to attend the conference by the applicant will be viewed in a positive light.
  • Please keep your 'other information' concise. Focus on providing details such as regarding other partial sources of funding you may have received, and how much funding from the ASA would be helpful to you. Details such as your paper topic and how important this conference is to your career, etc. are not helpful.
  • If you make a mistake, please do not resubmit, but email conference(at)theasa.org
  • Deadline: 20 February 2025

** ‘net income’ means your income after income tax, i.e. the amount you receive each month once tax has been deducted.

Info & application form

  • We will endeavour to make and communicate decisions by the start of March 2025.
  • Funding will first be allocated as a registration fee waiver, and where funding exceeds the waiver, remitted to recipients' bank accounts on our receipt of electronic receipts for travel and accommodation.
  • If a delegate does not attend the conference for whatever reason, they will be expected to return the full sum. If receipts are not submitted, funding is forfeit. These are the conditions accepted in applying for the funds.
  • In order to avoid sharing your contact information with Google Forms, the application form does not send an email confirmation on completion as Google will not gather your email address. It will instead state at the end: "Your application has been logged. We will get in touch with all applicants after the call has closed, and decisions have been made by the Funding Committee. We thank you for your patience."

The number of applications received is likely to be two-four times greater than we can assist. With the continued economic downturn and deterioration in institutional funding, we envisage competition will be significant. Applications have a greater chance of success if the amount requested is low or just for registration fee waivers, as we would like to help as many delegates as possible.
