ASA12: Arts and aesthetics in a globalising world

3rd-6th April 2012, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India

Funding information

The conference has only two funds available:

ASA funds to assist students based in the UK: we have just £2000 to share 4 or 5 ways to assist a handful of students from the UK with the not inconsiderable costs of participation. Priority will be given to convenors, paper-givers and ASA members. Clearly many applicants will be disappointed, but the ASA finances are fairly small..

Wenner Gren funds to assist South Asians living and working in South Asia: £7500 is to be used to enable the participation of those in South Asia, who ordinarily find their participation in international conferences restricted by lack of funds and exchange rate inequalities. Priority will be given to convenors and paper-givers. Again we cannot hope to fund everyone.

We understand that there are others, who do not come under these two headings, who lack the funds to participate. We are not short of understanding for these circumstances, but are short of funds to distribute. Please do what you can to find external funding.

How to apply

The application proces is now closed. The decisions will be communicated to applicants shortly.

Students in UK

Firstly, please do not apply if £400 is insufficient help - we can't provide more. Secondly, to apply for the student fund please email conference(at)theasa.org with ONLY the following information. Do NOT send any other additional info - such emails will be ignored completely. We already have your contact details, affiliation, paper details, etc.

South Asians in South Asia

Firstly, please do not apply for this fund, if you are not South Asian living in South Asia. Secondly, to apply for the funds, please read the notes below before then completing the online application form. Do NOT email sending any other additional info - such emails will be ignored completely. Please note the following:

  • The conference registration rate for South Asians in South Asia is £18 (INR1500). The rate for South Asian students, studying in South Asia is 0 INR, so students do NOT need to request registration waivers.
  • The form refers to University accommodation - we will do our best to provide accommodation for those funded in University hostels/guesthouses, if requested.
  • You do NOT need to state that you are a paper-giver or convenor - as we already have that info.
  • The form refers to euros where it should be pounds. Please work on the basis of 80 INR to the pound.
  • We ask about travel costs. Where possible, in order to share the money as widely as possible, we would ask South Asian scholars who can, to travel not by air but by train. (We understand that for some the journey will be too long or hard, but please consider this.)
  • Please keep your 'reason' concise - the general funding situation in South Asia is implicit/understood.
  • The form should recognise you once you enter your name and date of birth, if you already submitted a panel/paper. If it does not, please do not proceed, but instead email conference(at)theasa.org for a reminder as to how you previously input your name.
  • If you make a mistake, please do not resubmit, but email corrigenda to conference(at)theasa.org.
